Informed Decisions Consulting Celebrates Two Clients Making the Final of the 2023 IRM UK Data Governance Conference Europe Best Practice Award

We at Informed Decisions Consulting are proud to announce that two of our clients, Volvo Penta and Gothenburg Energy, have been named finalists for the 2023 IRM UK Data Governance Conference Europe Best Practice Award. This prestigious award recognises outstanding data governance programs, and both Volvo Penta and Gothenburg Energy have demonstrated outstanding effort in this area. These achievements highlight the importance of strong data governance practices in today’s data intensive world, and we are honoured to have played a significant part in enabling both Volvo Penta and Gothenburg Energy to achieve this recognition.

Our ID team of brilliant consultants has worked closely with both companies to design and institute effective data governance, and we are thrilled to see the efforts paying off.

If issues regarding data matters are addressed to a data governance organization, they could be escalated and resolved by people who may not be the best data designers and sometimes not understand the consequences of their decisions. If one of two sides “wins” you will get a loser and may have a new enemy. If you choose your own solution you can get two dissatisfied parties.

To reach data harmony, with lasting peace in the organization, we also need diplomacy. Using diplomacy, disagree­ments are resolved using negotiations striving for two winners. The data diplomacy concept is about reaching engagement, cooperation, and inclusion, and avoiding coercive shame/blame-games.

Consequently, data diplomacy applies to both data architecture and data governance. By focusing on behavior, rather than formalities, companies that adopted the data diplomacy approach experience benefits such as:

– Having a lean and brief, yet very efficient data governance organization
– Appreciation for the data governance efforts
– Having business representatives taking a huge interest in business data design, also taking responsibility for the outcome
– Facilitated business changes, for instance, when harmonizing vocabularies and introducing new data structures

The data diplomat may very well be a business data modeler, a business data architect, or a data governance lead. This session contains lots of real-world data diplomacy examples, the definition of the data diplomacy concept, and the profile and toolbox of a data diplomat.

Slicing a Big Data Elephant for a Safe Transformation

This is the story of how Göteborg Energi (Gothenburg Energy) managed to break down a huge and complex big data system into manageable pieces. By doing so, the executive managers became aware of what kind of decisions they needed to make, what the alternatives were and the expected consequences and outcomes from those decisions.

A self-made system for monitoring district heating production and distribution has been used since the mid-1980s and has been improved and modernized successfully since then. The system has several custom functions, works in an effective way and is very popular among the users. The system is vital for the operations as it supplies real-time data and statistics based on 20,000 sensors in the production plants and the distribution systems. Furthermore, the data from this monitoring system is processed and flooded vastly throughout the organization, in a way and to various purposes (including business-critical) no person can grasp.

As this monitoring system is self-made and has grown over the years, the data structure has been poorly documented. The technical environment of the system is now outdated, and, the market of monitoring systems has caught up. Altogether it is obvious that a safe transformation plan is urgent.

This presentation will cover:

  • How the gigantic and complex data masses were sliced into manageable pieces using a set of methods.
  • How executive managers were engaged in that process so that they realized what kind of decisions they needed to make.
  • How the outcome of this work became their roadmap for transformation.

Johan Lindholm is the Business Architect and the Data Governance Lead within
Göteborg Energi. He is a well-experienced architect and business analyst and has long experiences from development projects. He has established data governance throughout the entire organisation and is now working on transforming the company to acknowledging the business value of the company’s data.


Håkan Edvinsson is an author, trainer, speaker and consultant within Data
Governance and data-driven Business Architecture. Today, he is a senior partner and the CTO of Informed Decisions Consulting.  Håkan is the author of “Data
Diplomacy” (Technics Publications 2019) and the best-selling ”Enterprise
Architecture Made Simple” book (Technics Publications 2013). He is also

Informed Decisions will have our own session presenting the fundamentals of data management. Most of us acknowledge that data is a vital asset in an organization. In a mature state, data management is an integrated practice covering accountabilities, design, distribution, and usages of data in a way that fits the organization’s purposes, and, complies to regulatory requirements. However, this is rarely the case as in most organizations data management is mostly separated into a narrowed part of IT work and intricately detailed work in the daily business.

This workshop is intended to provide delegates with the fundamental knowledge of data management best practices striving for consistent, reliable and accurate business data in an increasingly digitalized environment.  This one-day workshop combines presentations, exercises, and discussions.
